CITYSCAPE: Anne Barkley
September 15-30, 2011

Picture
Cityscape II Acrylic on canvas 48x48"
Anne Barkley presents a collection of work which is inspired by an abstracted urban landscape. Some of her work has been described as architectural, although at the same time it also exhibits a sense of freedom and spontaneity. Her interest in colour, form, space and feeling is evident. She enjoys producing paintings that will entertain and intrigue both the eye and the mind. Her paintings are neither predictable nor easily assimilated.  As an artist, she not only wants the viewer to discover something new and different with each viewing, but also to experience a level of serenity and peacefulness from her work.  Although these locations exist in her own imagination, she is successful in sharing these visions with you.

“A cityscape is the urban equivalent of a landscape. The term refers to the configuration of built forms and interstitial space. In the visual arts, a cityscape is an artistic representation of the physical aspects of a city or urban space”.  WSAG is pleased to present Anne Barkley. Her most beautiful oil and acrylic paintings are available from September 15-30.

New Gravity 2011
Julie Davidson Smith's solo show "Passengers" is an exhibition of new paintings full of passion, imagination and memory. Her works play with figures in ambiguous spaces, landscapes of colour; simple lines scratched in paint evoke different emotions. Her visual language is fresh and dream-like, its message mysterious and seductive.

SURFACES: The Photos and the Stories
by Robin Laws Field
October 21-31, 2010

Picture
Pavements: Valetta, Malta
The Wellington Street Art Gallery is pleased to announce that an art exhibition entitled “SURFACES: The Photos and the Stories” by Robin Laws Field will be held from October 21-31, 2010.

Throughout her travels around the world, Robin Laws Field became fascinated by the colour and texture of surfaces; everything from floors, pavements, walls, fences, rusting freight cars, tree trunks, doors, shutters, footprints in the sand all got a second look.  Exquisite little bits of abstract art surrounded the artist crying out to be photographed and taken into her studio for a mixed-media (but mostly threaded needle) interpretation.

Laws Field notes that “colour and texture pull me in and keep me up at night until I’ve figured out how to make them mine; and then how to picture them so that others can see what I see, be it beautiful, ugly, political, sentimental, funny or just a scintillating juxtaposition of bits and pieces that somehow please. And, because much of my inspiration has arrived in places not my own there is always a memory of place attached.”

The memories are those of the artist, but the visuals that kick-start each are at the WSAG for all to view starting October 21, 2010.

Picture
'Payne' 36x48in SOLD
Kingston painter Michèle LaRose will be featured at the Wellington Street Art Gallery with an exhibition of new works from October 7 to 24, 2010.

According to LaRose, her colorful new abstract works reflect a certain tension between freedom and control.  "In the process," she says, "I'm searching for that precarious balance point where excitement happens and understanding may be possible."

From small intimate pieces such as Polyrythmic to large expressive paintings like Spinning Out, she uses color and shape to engage viewers in her search for balance (28 artworks available).
