Gwynne Giles

The
abstract and contemporary paintings of Gwynne Giles offers a fresh and
intelligent perspective on a variety of topics, people and places including
that of “Ethel”; a surreal character
that often appears in his diverse collection of minimalist artworks. He uses bright primary colours and angular
shapes to capture his creative themes that range from a homage to Jayne Mansfield;
to Ethel attending a wedding; or that of a landscape of Inverness. As a relatively new artist in Toronto, Gwynne
has already successfully shown at several exhibitions since 2008, most recently at the 2013 Toronto Artists Project. This is his first solo show at WSAG.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT: In my art I paint in a naive, even primitive style that is very precise and clear. I use primary colours as they best express the simplicity of my work. I was initially inspired by the ancient pictographs found on cave walls. If I can, I like my paintings to have a twist, pathos or some humour -- that is often not readily apparent. Gwynne Giles 2012
