Accomplished in both steel and ceramic sculpture, Hanna Back was born and educated in Stuttgart, Germany. She started her career at the Max Planck Institute (the foremost German Research organization) in metallurgical research. This research, particularly microscopic photography of crystalline structures, lead Hanna towards the search for a more personal expression. She entered the Academy of Art in Stuttgart to study ceramic arts and opened a small studio. Looking for more space (inner and outer) she moved to a rural area in Canada in 1979 where she built her present studio in eastern Ontario.
Hanna Back continued her studies by attending conferences and workshops in Canada, US and Japan. She held a number of teaching appointments at various schools of Art and Architecture and has provided workshops in her studio. The artist's work has been featured in many journals, magazines and catalogs in Canada and abroad. She is a member of a number of professional associations and is represented in many private and public collections in Canada, USA, Germany and Japan. She has also received a number of awards including recognition by the Ontario Arts Council.
