WSAG is pleased to present Angela Verlaeckt Clark, SCA (Sculptor), to kick off its fall season of art shows which includes both her stone sculptures and fused glass art. Over the years, Angela’s stone sculptures have become her personal witness, recording emotional and spiritual connections.  The inner stillness and quiet observation of her Abenaki heritage reveal a spirituality and peacefulness in her stone sculptures. And, her fused glass art panels and sculptural glass pieces resonate with the colours and mood of Japanese designed textiles...richly hued and vibrant.  Each sculpture is a piece of timelessness given dimension, a landscape carefully negotiated; quiet, strong and yet very gentle.

Recognizing her poetry enhanced the abstract art form she favours, each stone sculpture is accompanied by an original poem which is written at the sculpture’s conclusion.  The centre piece of her art show, In the Arms of a Galaxy, at WSAG (September 2013) is entitled 'Purity', accompanied with these words:

Purity
In the arms of a galaxy...
Purity's silhouette, is the space
Between
The absolute and the mysterious.

The artist reflects that the sculpture “speaks for itself... its pure shape is contrasted by the honeycomb in the interior which speaks of life in the here and now, and, the exterior, so mysterious in its purity.”

INDIVIDUAL ART WORKS and POEMS:

Interpreting Angela's Stone Sculptures

"My stones are millions of years old, very peaceful and calming.  As children we hold stones in our hands, skip them across water and feel the energy beneath our fingers.

Reach out and touch my sculptures, connect with them...there is no right or wrong way to interpret the work before you!  I write only what I sensed when first touching each stone.  The words or thoughts that came to me during the sculpting of a piece are copied to the chalk board hung on my studio wall.  At the completion of each sculpture, even before the base is designed, I write and re-write those same words; they become the accompanying poem and the base begins on its design path.

I believe a base is integral to each work; necessary in lifting a common stone, to the poetic, giving each sculpture the importance it deserves.

Perhaps, the souls of ancestors are within the stone, whispering..."

Purity
'Purity' has its own voice...a pure shape contrasted by the honeycomb in the interior which speaks of life in the here and now, and the exterior, so mysterious in its purity.

Folds of Life
The layers in this stone seemed to cry out ‘search, and you will find my spirit's reflected, separate existence'.

Picture
African Wonderstone / Stainless Steel 24in x 24in x 59in

Folds of Life

Look beyond the eyes,
Beyond the layered surface
Of this season, this reality and circumstance;
Search the valleys
Rippled with the anxiety,
Of
'Really' being known;
Somewhere, deeply hidden in the folds of life,
Lies the soul of me...
That soul defiantly courting
Our sameness,
Seems a fusion forged at the Eden of meaning...

'You' give me the breath to soar,
Rising above this weight
That knows me 'down'...

Twilight's Child

Picture
Green Brucite / Hand-Forged Steel 12 in x 9 in x 12in

Twilight’s Child

A breath exhales on shutter-clicks...

In dips and swirls
Brain-shots pulse
From centre earth;

The warrior child shift-shapes,
Cherished,
Into twilight's child.

Seawater's Swell

Picture
Carrera Marble / Fused Glass / Stainless Steel, 22in X 13in X 9in
Seawater's Swell

Dream messengers of the soul
Inspire her sacred dance...

Seawaters, tossed into exotic forms
Swell and crash silently on a shore,
An underworld churned in its hollow;

With serpentine grace,
 Undulating patterns
Record their triumphs;

Nature in grand expression
Escaping her conscious world!

The Puzzle Box

Picture
Cornish Stone / Iron 26 1/4in x 9.5in x 8in

The Puzzle Box

Within
The puzzle box
On wings
Of a
Disordered mind,
A secret
Swirls
Around and around,
Captured
By
Rusted silences.

The Spaces Between

Picture
Chinese Panda Stone / Hand-Forged Steel 15 in x 10 in x 8in
The Spaces Between

Between the tangible and intangible
Movement is elusive...

Time is 'this' space,
Then 'it' is not...
Painted with an icy brush
Memories seem ephemeral
Existing only in a still mind;

Powerful magic abstracts
The spaces between...

Whispers

Picture
Brucite-Dolomite / Hand-Forged Steel 12in x 8in x 28in

Whispers

Whispers from beyond the visible,
Rooted in time
And
Steeled by the voices of ancients,
Fall silent across the human landscape.

Night Wanderer

Picture
Basalt / Hand-Forged Steel 12in x 7in x 29in

Night-Wanderer

Steeled against darkness,
Drama sweeps mystery inward toward self...

Poised at the gateway of daybreak
And morning's edge
A Night-wanderer
Conjures poetic visions;

An interpreting spirit-eye
Moves beyond sight,
Visually inspiring a sensitive heart.

At the Edge

Picture
Green Serpentine / Hand-Forged Steel, 21in x 12in x 9in

At the Edge

At the edge of nocturnal sands,
Lies a water-world...

Floating on dreams and whispers,
A wave surges
Sheer and stark from the sea...
A watery moiré,
Ruled by Moons
From far beyond...

With time on its side,
Water tendrils trace the surface of memories
Embracing the rough shoreline...

More than death, she fears...anonymity.
